First day out
We finally did it! Today is our first day out on
the water. We end up in Port Ludlow.
After being sick yesterday (I had a reaction to
the last rabies vaccine we had two days ago), we had to postpone our trip a
day.We started off our day about 0800
and started getting the boat ready to sail. We had to take down the canvas
covers, stow all the loose things, and set up the
dinghy.Then Scott from Yachtmasters
showed up about 0930. We went over rigging spares and then went out for a quick
rig check. There wasn't much wind, so we ended up not doing much looking at the
rig tune. We dropped Scott back off at
Shilshole about noon. Since we hadn't gotten a full tank of fual last Thursday,
we stopped at the fuel dock and filled up. Another 65 gallons later, and we were
ready to go.We headed out of Shilshole
about 1230. The wind was very light, but Steven really likes to sail if at all
possible. We put up the sails and made about 1.75 knots. The current was with
us, however, so we made closer to 3 knots over the
ground. We put out the trolling rig for
a few hours, but didn't catch anything but weed. After 7.5 hours of sailing, the
wind finally died and the currents turned against us. We had to fire up the
engine. A couple hours later at 2140, we pulled into Port Hardy, about 20
minutes before it would have been too dark to get into the unfamiliar anchorage.
We both think we cut that one too close: moral of the story is to leave early
and arrive early!Port Hardy is quiet,
about 25 miles north of Seattle in Puget Sound. This is about 10 miles south of
Port Townsend, the last town on the Sound before it opens up into the Straight
of Juan De
Fuca.
Today,
we made 29.2 miles - 9.5 in 6:15 of sailing, and the rest motoring in 3.5 hours.
You might ask why we didn't do more motoring and less sailing. The answer to
that is that Steven is really stubborn about using the engine - if the wind is
blowing at all and we're not in danger due to current, the engine stays
off.The evening is quiet with very
little wind. It is drizzling lightly. Roma is reading up on our upcoming
cruising grounds. Steven has been fiddling with the satellite weather receiver,
which is still refusing to work well let alone at all. The boys are in bed. They
pretty much played all day. They did poke their heads up when we went through
large-ship-wake, or when we saw some dolphins or cool
jellyfish.
