Effingham Bay

We left Ucluelet in reduced visibility to travel the 10 miles to Effingham Bay, where there was an abandoned Indian village to explore.

We made a short hop to Effiingham Island. It would have been a breeze, except that there were nasty reefs and rocks all around, and the water being clear as mud is impossible to see through. We made it OK though, and anchored in a really deep anchorage (42 feet).

We spent a rough night (the wind picked up out of the west at 20 - 25 knots and threw us about), and in the morning went in to hike the rough trail to the other side of the island, where there was an abandoned Indian village.

The trail really was rough, at places little more than a slightly used path through ferns, over felled trees, and reeds. Getting to the other side, we came out on a nice sandy beach.

The kids had a great time collecting seashells and looking in tidepools. Then we went rock climbing looking for the supposed cave that uncovers at low tide. However, the tide wasn't all that low, and we didn't find it. The day was a fun one, however, and although it was clear and sunny, it was still butt cold (there's really no such thing as warm up here).

When we got back to our dinghy, we found it high and dry. It had been floating when we left it.

We got it back in the water and prepared for our next days journey back to Victoria.
