Tropical Storm
On the good side, Gage's sickness lasted only the
morning. By the afternoon, he was up and playing again. Must have just been a
short illness. On the bad side, just
when you thought it couldn't get any
worse...Last night we heard about a
storm that was coming that caused the Gautemalan school authorities to close all
school for all kids for both Friday and Saturday. What was this storm, where was
it, and where was it going? Well, in the house, there is a computer, but no
connection to the internet. No help there. We watched the news at 2100, and to
our horror, there on the NOAA graphic, was a tropical storm named Adrian! It was
coming straight for the coast of El Salvador. Great! Here we are, 200 miles from
our boat, with the first ever potential hurricane to hit El Salvador from the
Pacific. The first storm of the season, nonetheless! We had not preapred our
boat for a severe storm let alone a hurricane.
Today
we called Heriberto Pineda at the Barillas Marina Club. Wonderfully, he had
already taken down some of the sun covers that we left up. He agreed to take
more of the stuff down, and we gave him the contact number for the house we're
staying at. It will be another 12 hours of intense worry before we know what
happened, and all we can really do is
wait.Our friends Sula are even
potentially closer to the storm center (which this afternoon was upped to a
Category I hurricane). We just spoke with them and they said it was raining hard
but there hadn't been much wind (at 1730). We hope it remains that way for
them. For those of you in the United
States, you've no idea how good and easy it is to access information. Consider
yourselves lucky!We're headed back to
Guatemala City tomorrow to try to catch the first bus back to San Salvador.
Unfortunately the hurricane is predicted to go right over San Salvador, so we've
no idea how long it will be before we will be able to get back! More
later...
