Sunday in Antigua
Today we had to fend for ourselves because our
family stay only provides meals Monday through Saturday. No big deal. We spent
the day mostly sitting around the Bagel Barn coffee shop. They have free
internet and also show a movie during the afternoon.
Before
lunch, Gage got to go on a horse ride around the square. Boy did he love
that!
Yesterday
Roma went to the big market with Flori and Pablo took the kids and I up to Cerra
de la Cruz, which is a park with a large cross on a hill overlooking town. The
view was fantastic. Unfortunately, Roma had the
camera.A couple of days ago, our
Spanish instructor told us how difficult it was to get a visa to leave Guatemala
(to go out of Central America). We usually talk about various things in the
morning as a warm up to the classes, and the discussion today was about
travelling. We were surprised to learn that it is almost impossible for a normal
Guatemalan to get a visa to exit the country. In order to get a visa, you must
own several properties, have a certain amount of assets in banks, and then pay a
hefty fee just for the visa application. Apparently, someone doesn't want
various citizens leaving the country for greener pastures (or maybe it's the
other way around). Anyway, this all means that many Guatemalans never leave
Guatemala, not just because they don't want to, but because they cannot.
