Rodeo

The two weird looking fish we think were ladyfish, but we're not sure. The meat was really soft (like falling-apart soft) so we chucked them. The other fish had a couple of good fillets on him.

The refrigeration guys didn't come out today, but I guess that's pretty much par for the course. We'll try to hook up another time.

Yesterday Roma and I went to Liberia and the kids stayed with Unity. We had a good trip and got lots of things done. I bought a bunch of refrigerant, ordered some stuff to be shipped to the states to pick up when Roma is back there, dropped off my rusted old outboard motor lock at a custom stainless place where they might be able to duplicate the design, only in the much better stainless material, dropped plans by a seamstress for some boat coverings, ate good chinese food, and bought some inline filters for my refrigeration system. Unfortunately, when we got back to the boat I saw that the filters I bought were not the exact kind I need, so now I'm trying to figure out if we can use them or must return them.

Tonight we went into Coco via taxi for the rodeo. This was quite a kick! The rodeo is bull-riding. The cowboys are authentic. The clowns performed in the first ride, and they were great. The second ride, the rider got stomped after falling off. The third ride, the guy was knocked unconscious and had to be carried out of the ring.

The spectators were nuts. You could either pay C$1000 (about US$2.20) for sitting on the ring fence, or and extra C$1000 for bleacher seats. We did the bleacher seats with the kids. Many of the male spectators down on the fence seats actually went in the ring and taunted the bulls. One guy got knocked off the fence by a bull and had to be carried off to the ambulance.

The grand finale was a bull with very large horns. The horns had leather wraps on them. After the bull-ride, spectators were encouraged to try to grab the leather cover (only one was left on the left side) off the horns. To encourage, an amount of money was offered. It started out at C$1000 and went up to C$15000 before the announcer decided that the bull won and the caballeros came out to lasso and retire the bull.

However, in that amount of time, we saw many close attempts at the horns. One gringo with a blue tank top on almost got gored - he basically was almost run down but put his hand out and scooted along in front of the bull. After that, he got out of the ring. Another guy got his belt torn off when he ran from behind and the bull caught him with a horn as he saw him out of the corner of his eye. There were several other close calls. All in all, very entertaining and stupid in a macho way.

The kids liked the show, but got bored because it often took 10 minutes between rides. One bull would not move nor leave the ring. It took about 30 minutes to finally get him to leave. The thing ended up twisting itself up in the caballeros' ropes until it could barely move without falling. The cowboys wisely dropped their lines to keep the bull from hurting itself.

During the show, guys would come around with popcorn, cotton candy, beer, soda, etc. just like at a baseball game. The people were fun to watch too. One couple to our right was an interesting match. The young woman (who was stacked) was probably about 19, and the guy was probably about 43. She went through 3 cotton candies during the show, as well as beer, meat on a stick, a tortilla, etc., and he kept licking her on the face and neck. Strange but true. There were women with little babies there too. One girl looked about 19 or 20 and was bottle feeding her infant in the stands. There were gringos too. Coco is a fairly tourist town.
