Roma and our fellow house-guest, Guiseppe. Guiseppe was wonderful, and not only because he spoke English, Spanish, French, and Italian. He was a truly great guy, and we hope we hook up with him again somewhere along the way (maybe in his home Switzerland?).

Nuestra Senora de Candelaria at night. It was built in 1540 by the Dominicans. This was once one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in the New World at its time. It was damaged by an earthquaqe, rebuilt, and then more earthquake damage. It hasn't been in use since about 1773.

On the left, Maria, the family's youngest member at 5 years old. In the middle, Talita, recently turned 9 and good friend from down the street. And I think you know the other guy.

Gage learned about "Age of Empires II" at the family's house. In the background are Elsibeth and Talita. Elsibeth is Talita's mom, and the family pays her to come in the evenings to help get dinner on the table. She and her daughter are wonderful and nice people.

Leif and Diego became good friends.

Another shot. These guys liked to go out and kick a ball around. Diego, like many Guatemalan men, is crazy about soccer.

Our worrys increase as tropical storm Adrian looks like it might become a hurricane. In this graphic, the arrow is going right over where Trinity is.

Looking down a typical Antigua street. This was around the corner from the house we stayed at.

Susi, the family's very friendly and helpful day help. She was responsible for cooking and cleaning from about 7 AM until 4 PM. She was also very helpful with Spanish.
DSC03891.JPG
Steven, Flori, and Roma. Flori was incredibly helpful in Spanish, and it was wonderful to stay in her and Pablo's home. Pablo was absent most of the last two days we stayed with them, so unfortunately we don't have a picture of him, but he was a fantastic guy. He worked hard to help get the kids out of their shell and speaking Spanish.

The Swensons with Steven and Roma's teacher, Monica. This is how we spent our mornings, Mon. - Fri. at the school. In the afternoons, the school often had activities that we participated in like Salsa dancing, museum visits, and making tortillas. Monica was a good teacher, very patient, and full of great information about Guatemalan culture and life.
